Alanine Transaminase (ALT) – For females, the ALT value should be 25 units per liter and for males it should be 33 units per litre as shown in the liver functions test normal values. So, if the ALT levels are more than the liver function test normal range, it might get released into the blood.

- Stop taking certain medicines as per your physician’s instructions some hours/days before taking the test
- Stay empty stomach for a few hours before the test is conducted
- Drink water as per the doctor’s recommendation before the test
To prepare for a liver function test, the doctor may ask you to stay on an empty stomach for 8 to 12 hours. So, you may not be allowed to eat or drink before undergoing the test. If you are already under any medication, you must inform them about that, else it may affect the test results.
You may not be allowed to eat or drink anything before the test is performed. So, you will have to fast for 10-12 hours prior to the test.

It depends on your health and the result of your test. If there are any abnormalities in your liver function test, you might have to repeat it in a few months as prescribed by your doctor.
